The Confederate States of America (CSA) was a unrecognized breakaway confederate republic in the Southern United States that existed from February 8, 1861, to May 9, 1865. The Confederacy comprised U.S. states that declared secession and warred against the United States during the American Civil War. They were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

The Confederacy was formed on February 8, 1861, by seven slave states: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. All seven were in the Deep South region of the United States, whose economy was heavily dependent upon agriculture—particularly cotton—and a plantation system that relied upon enslaved Americans of African descent for labor.

The Confederacy was led by Jefferson Davis, a former U.S. senator and secretary of war. Davis was a strong supporter of states' rights and slavery, and he believed that the secession of the Southern states was necessary to protect their way of life.

The Confederacy's war effort was hampered by a number of factors, including its lack of industrial resources, its poor transportation system, and its shortage of manpower. The Union, on the other hand, had a much larger population and economy, and it was able to outproduce the Confederacy in terms of weapons and supplies.

The war ended on April 9, 1865, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The Confederacy was officially dissolved on May 26, 1865.

The legacy of the Confederacy is a complex one. On the other hand, it was also a symbol of states' rights and regional identity. Today, the Confederate flag is flown by people who see it as a symbol of Southern heritage.
