The Christopher Moody Pirate Flag was used during the 18th Century. The red flag ultimately came to mean "no quarter given", that no mercy would be shown, no life would be spared. The hourglass with wings indicated fleeting time. The arm carrying a sword represented fighting. The skull and bones, of course, meant death. The full message was, "Your time is running out. If you fight you will die."
