South Carolina seceded on December 20th, 1860. On December 21st a red flag with a single white star and an upside down crescent moon was raised over the Charleston Custom House. This design spread to other areas as a symbol of secession. Needless to say with the adoption of the South Carolina National Flag it had a brief life. The original flag was later used on the CSS Dixie.
