Product Overview

THIS FLAG IS ON SPECIAL.

The 10th South Carolina Infantry Regiment fought from the beginning of the war until after Appomattox, and had a reputation for toughness.

One story of Lt. White is typical. White commanded a unit that was surprised and captured by Federal cavalry. As the Confederates were about to be led away, other men of White's regiment were nearby and were prepared to fire on the Federals. But they hesitated because their own men were present.

Lt. White hollered out, "Don't mind us, commence firing!"

A well-aimed volley was poured into the Federal ranks. White and his men then fought with their captors, and made their escape, taking some of the Federals with them as prisoners.

At another time Private Burroughs of the 10th was captured and sent to Chicago's notorious Camp Douglas. Burroughs gave up several prison meals so he could buy a stamp to write to a former business associate in the North, asking him to send him underwear and blankets on credit. The Northerner replied that he would, but only ?if Burroughs swore an oath of allegiance to the Union. Burroughs starved himself for more meals to buy another stamp so he could send a defiant refusal.
