Description

The 4th North Carolina Infantry served with Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. It was part of the attack on Casey's Redoubt at Seven Pines, where it earned the Seven Pines battle honors shown on the flag. The 4th also fought at Malvern Hill, the Bloody Lane at Antietam, all three days at Chancellorsville, Oak Ridge at Gettysburg, the Wilderness, the Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania, the 1864 Valley Campaign, the Siege of Petersburg, and the engagements leading up to Appomattox. The famous color-bearer, John Stikeleather, was a member of the 4th. .” At the Battle of Seven Pines Stikeleather volunteered to carry the colors. All 25 officers of his regiment were lost in that battle, and the Palmetto Sharpshooters lost 10 of 11 members of its color guard. At one point the flag passed through four hands without touching the ground.
